How many bad habits are you guilty of? Nail biting, snacking, picking your nose… My personal top two are procrastinating and stress-eating.
Whether you want to admit it or not, we all have bad habits and they can turn up in a million different ways.
Most of our bad habits are in response to stress. It is actually a pretty simple formula: Something happens 👉 emotions or physical tension gets triggered👉 you unconsciously fall back on an old habit to try and trick your brain into thinking you feel better.
Getting rid of a bad habit can feel impossible, but I want to remind you that you are not stuck.
You don’t have to rely on old patterns to try and convince yourself that everything is going to be okay.  For me, it is really important to start by recognizing that your bad habit isn’t some kind of punishment and it’s not because you are weak. The reality is that you are just committed to something that used to help, even if it’s not working any more.
You can take a deep breath and relax because it doesn’t have to stay that way.
You have a natural ability to create better unconscious patterns. Your whole life you have been upgrading your thoughts, skills, talents, and strengths. If you want a better life, then let’s start by replacing your bad habit with something better.
YOU so have this!
First – Get a hold on yourself Finding a stress management technique that works for you will relax the trigger. I have already written about one of my favorite stress-busting techniques. You can find it here- Fast and Effective Trick to Beat Stress and Anxiety
Next – Practice your pause Taking a moment before you do anything will help you make better choices. I’m not even talking a big delay. Waiting as little as 50 to 100 milliseconds gives your brain enough time to refocus on what you want instead of falling into old habits.
Then – Upgrade your internal GPS No matter where you want to be in life, having the route mapped out makes getting there faster and easier. Decide what you would rather do, then start practicing all the steps you are going to take to get there in your mind.
One more thing….
Don’t forget to give yourself credit for all the good you do. Life is not always easy, but there are plenty of ways to make it easier. Make sure you’re taking time for you: relax, reset, have a laugh, and have some fun. Deal? 💕💕
