What is the first thing you think of when someone says hypnosis? Chances are for some people, their only idea of hypnosis is a Vegas style show where people are clucking like chickens or forget their name. Others might know hypnotherapy is amazing; that it has helped friends or family to stop smoking, or overcome phobias. Rest assured, as entertaining as it is, stage hypnosis isn’t similar at all to a clinical hypnotherapy setting.

You may wonder who can benefit from hypnotherapy, and can I even be hypnotized?

Each and every one of us goes in and out of altered states multiple times every day. An example is when we are completely focused on just one thing or when we allow our minds to daydream. If you’ve ever found yourself zoning out, it’s a similar state of mind you will achieve in a hypnotherapy session.

Hypnosis is about relaxing the conscious mind off to the side so that the subconscious is free to take on positive suggestions. If you can physically hear my voice and are willing, you can be hypnotized if you want to be. Because the conscious mind remains present, you are aware of everything that is said. You are never under or out of it.

Here are my top 3 reasons why you should try hypnosis:

  1. Relaxation and Stress Reduction – Most of my clients say that hypnosis is so relaxing they don’t want the session to end. Being able to reduce anxiety and sleep more peacefully are additional benefits.
  2. Make Peace – Tired of that nagging voice in your head telling you that you aren’t good enough, smart enough, sexy, rich, worthy…? Wouldn’t it be nice to be nice to yourself? Hypnotherapy can help you love and accept yourself and find peace within.
  3. Future Pacing – In hypnosis you will see yourself accomplishing goals. Whether you are imagining it or actually doing it, the same part of the brain is firing. This technique is used to see events going well; being your best, most confident self. Perfect for overcoming phobias, increasing performance or just being your best you.

Hypnotherapy is not a magical cure, it still takes work and effort, but it is amazing how quickly changes can happen when your subconscious mind is on-board.

As a professional hypnotherapist reading people’s comments on the school board’s settlement, it is shocking to see just how many misconceptions still surround hypnotherapy.

I’ve read everything from “hypnosis lets in the devil” (um no, hypnosis was approved by the Vatican in the late 1800s) to “hypnosis unleashes traumatic memories” (again false – the hypnotic state does not by default bring repressed memories to the surface).

Worst of all is the idea that hypnotherapy is a medical procedure that somehow alters the brain.  Hypnotherapy is NOT a medical procedure and is not intended to take the place of professional medical care. Hypnotherapists require written consent from a doctor before offering hypnosis support for any medical condition.

WHAT IT IS:

Hypnosis is a natural state we all go in and out of multiple times every day.  It’s a state of hyper focus that allows us to be in the zone whether we are watching a movie, driving, or just relaxing.  A well-trained hypnotherapist facilitates this natural state to help you achieve your best self.  They don’t have power over you, can’t put you ‘under’, and certainly can’t force you to do anything against your will.  If we had that kind of power, Dan Brown would be writing novels about us!
It is easy to be scared by the sensationalized headlines; there are many in the article below, but it is important to understand what hypnotherapy can and cannot do.  Misconceptions about Hypnotherapy happen all the time, and it misleads the general public.
